In December 2013, I had the most amazing opportunity to travel to San Antonio, Texas and participate in The Daring Way™ National Training with Dr. Brené Brown and her team. Prior to going I had seen Brené on Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul Sunday and found myself captivated by her words. Prior to the show, I had not heard of her and after the show, I immediately picked up Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection. While reading these books, I was ushered into a different form of self-assessment and deep digging, as the language and results of her research challenged many of my thoughts and ideals and ultimately shifted me in ways personally and professionally in my work with clients. For instance when I read "Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best" and "perfectionism is other-focused-What will they think?" While "healthy striving is self-focused-How can I improve?" My perception was altered. It made so much sense! I yearned for more and happened to find online an offering of a training whereby one could become a certified trainer in this work. I completed the application and subsequently registered without really knowing what I was signing up for. I just went with an open mind, a lofty expectation of an amazing week that would no doubt challenge me, stretch me, and birth a new perspective on how I journey through life. We dove into the work- waded through and explored vulnerability, scarcity, shame, empathy, self-compassion, creativity and authenticity. Whew! I came away from that experience richer and wanting to share this newfound way to journey through life WHOLEHEARTEDLY. A few years ago I completed the Gifts of Imperfection eCourse which incorporated the Gifts of Imperfection guideposts and The Daring Way™ curriculum with mixed media art journaling. I thoroughly enjoyed the art-focus and dispelled the "I am NOT a creative being" myth. I have primarily incorporated this work into my 1:1 sessions with clients and have presented workshops for helping professionals. Now in an effort to further expand this tribe called Wholehearted, I am delving into my well of courage...deep breath...and sharing the material via small group. I invite you to join me on this journey toward Wholehearted living using art, while practicing courage and vulnerability and building community.
